Wilton Clay Target Team

The Wilton High School Clay Target Team, like the other clay target teams in Bismarck and around the state are organized through the North Dakota State High School Clay Target League (NDSHSCTL). The NDSHSCTL is part of the USA Clay Target League (USACTL).
The mission of these organizations and our team are:
Safety First. Teach students to handle firearms safely and operate on the range safely. This is our number one goal.
Have fun. Target shooting is fun!! This will be a positive environment. We all learn better with encouragement.
Marksmanship. We all want to be more accurate and consistent when we shoot at clays. Success comes with practice.

These websites have A LOT of information about Clay Target Teams in general, from rules and safety measures, to what is clay target shooting?
When you register your student there will be a registration fee (for each discipline the student participates in), it is approximately $40.00 and it must be paid online. That fee goes to NDSCTL and USACTL, it pays for their website and administrators and advertising….
There will be an additional cost to joining the team. That cost will be approximately $300.00, per discipline (trap, skeet, 5-Stand, or Sporting Clays) this covers shells and range/target fees. This amount will vary slightly per shooter. 12 gauge and 20 gauge shells do not cost the same. Some shooters may decide not to buy practice cards. Sporting Clays and 5-Stand cost more to participate in than Trap or Skeet, and range fees can vary. We work with team sponsors to raise enough money to with the cost of our sport.
Who can shoot on the Wilton High School Clay Target Team?
6th grade-12th grade students from Wilton, Washburn, and Wing can join our team. NO EXPERIENCE is necessary. We will follow the Wilton School’s guidelines for academic eligibility. New shooters will only be able to shoot trap their 1st year, with few exceptions.
Where will the students practice and compete?
We do all of our practicing and competing at Capital City Sporting Clays. Here is their web link https://ccsclays.com . NOTE: This is NOT the Capital City Gun Club off of Hwy 83.
Does my student need to have taken Hunters Safety in order to join?
Your student needs to have completed Hunters Safety OR complete the SAFE certification program on the USACTL website (this is an online course AND requires shooting range training with one of the team’s coaches). The cost for this class is approximately $30.00. The SAFE certification can not be used to obtain a hunting license. The SAFE course Or Hunters Safety must be completed BEFORE competition begins. Here is the link for the SAFE class: USA Clay Target SAFE Certification
Does my student need their own firearm?
Yes, your student needs to provide their own firearm.
When is the Clay Target Season?
We have 2 seasons, 1 in Spring and 1 in Fall. The fall season usually runs between mid-September and late-October. The spring season runs late March – mid May. There is 1 reserve week, “competition day” this day is held in the beginning of the season, during which we shoot as a team and record the score, but we “don’t use the score” unless we have to cancel 1 of our “regular competition” days due to a blizzard or thunderstorm. Reserve days are used for the ENTIRE team, not for individuals. Then, finally, there are 5 competition weeks (competition days are held on Sundays) during which scores are recorded and submitted online to be tracked.
When do we compete?
We compete as a team. Competition days are on Sundays because that day tends to not interfere with other sports or school functions. We generally compete on Sundays between 12pm-4pm (different disciplines use different courses and have different time slots, we will try to accommodate everyone’s availability).
When do we practice?
During the season coaches available on Wednesday evenings (5:30-7pm) at CCSC. You will need to supervise your student if you bring them out to CCSC on a non-practice day (they will need you to run the controller for them). Students can NOT practice at CCSC without a parent/guardian or coach with them. Sometimes coaches can be available for additional practice days, call/text us if you need to arrange that.
